URGENT warnings have been issued by the foreign office to holidaymakers with plans to travel to Turkey.

The Government have warned tourists who plan to travel to the holiday destination over the summer to expect serious disruption as the country faces unscheduled presidential and parliamentary elections later this month.

In a statement issued on Friday, a Government spokesperson said: “Presidential and parliamentary elections will take place on June 24 2018.

"This may result in rallies and demonstrations around the country.

"You should avoid large gatherings and follow the advice of the local authorities.”

The office also advises against all but essential travel to anywhere within 6.2 miles of the border with Syria, including the remaining areas of Sirnak, Mardin and Sanliurfa.

The election was called by president of 15 years Recep Tayyip Erdogan in response to opposition against his rule in Turkey.

In 2016 around 1.7 million British sun-seekers visited the popular destination.
