PUPILS at a Kidderminster school have welcomed their new headteacher - whose mission is to inspire them with "wonder".

Kay Butler, who in her spare time plays golf and bowls, has taken over at the helm of Birchen Coppice Primary.

The 49-year-old has been a teacher for 14 years and joins Birchen Coppice from Perry Wood Primary at Worcester, where she was deputy head for six and a half years.

Her previous schools were Great Witley Primary, Matchborough First at Redditch and Wollescote Primary in Stourbridge.

Mrs Butler said: "At Birchen Coppice I am aiming to promote the climate for wonder, enthusiasm and questioning.

"We want to provide different pathways to participate in the discovery of learning and prepare our pupils to be outstanding."

Besides golf and bowls she enjoys going to music festivals - with Beautiful Days in Devon and Lakefest in Tewkesbury her favourites.

Mrs Butler, who lives in Worcester, takes over from acting head teacher Rachel Higgins, who remains at Birchen Coppice as her deputy.

Her appointment follows the retirement 18 months ago of previous head Leanne Billingsley.
