THE largest teaching union is holding a special fundraiser in Rednal for a cancer charity this month.

The National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers, (NASUWT), is holding the event at Hillscourt Centre, Rose Hill, on Friday, September 26.

The event is being held as part of the World’s Biggest Coffee Morning for Macmillan Cancer Support, the charity which supports people with cancer and their families.

But the event will be slightly different as instead of a morning event, coffee lovers are being invited to enjoy afternoon tea.

Sandwiches, cakes, scones and tea or coffee will be available for £5, and there will even be a glass of Pimms available for £6.50.

Chris Keates, general secretary of the NASUWT, explained the event was being held to support the charity as it had supported many of its colleagues.

"Macmillan Cancer Support is particularly close to the hearts of NASUWT employees as we have supported many colleagues through diagnosis and treatment of a variety of cancers, and have also tragically lost much-loved colleagues to this dreadful disease," she said.

"Most recently a senior member of staff, Karen Sims, died of cancer aged 40.

"We are sure that Karen would have been thrilled to know the NASUWT is honouring her memory by raising funds for Macmillan Cancer Support in this way.

"But everyone can use the opportunity to remember a loved one and contribute to help beat cancer.

"I hope local people will take this opportunity to take time out of their busy lives and enjoy the stunning grounds and surrounding woodlands of Hillscourt."

People are invited to drop in and support the event, but can reserve a table to avoid disappointment by calling 0121 457 6100.

The event takes place between 11.30am and 4.30pm.
