THE managing director of Wychavon District Council is to become the shared chief executive and managing director of both Wychavon and Malvern Hills District Council after a decision was taken at both council meetings earlier this month.

Jack Hegarty, who has worked in local government for 29 years, is set to cover the role for both councils, from December 1, in a bid to make Wychavon an annual saving of £60,000.

Councillor Paul Middlebrough, leader of Wychavon, said: “We welcome this appointment as a chance to save money and build resilience in uncertain times. But we want to reassure residents that this is business as usual for Wychavon. We are well used to sharing services and people between other councils and organisations whilst continuing to provide excellent, great value services and this will only continue.”

Mr Hegarty added: “I’m really looking forward to this new challenge. Maintaining the individuality of both councils is a high priority for me and I’m acutely aware that this is important at both MHDC and Wychavon. There will of course be shared opportunities in the future, as there have been in the past, but ensuring local identity is maintained is key. There will also be opportunities for improved resilience and cost savings to be enjoyed by both councils.”
