A RUBERY sailor, whose name fits his hobby, has received a prestigious award from HRH the Princess Royal recognising his contribution to the sport.

Alan Salerman, a member of Arden Sailing Club, was honoured with the Royal Yachting Association (RYA) Lifetime Commitment Award at sailing's national governing body's annual awards ceremony, held in London on Friday, (November 21).

Alan has been an enduring figure on the West Midlands sailing scene for more than 40 years. His greatest legacy is considered by many to be the role he played in driving the re-establishment of Arden SC, near Pershore, after it was forced to move from its previous site in 1997.

A new location was found and, almost single handedly, Alan had plans drawn up and planning permission applied for, which was granted second time around.

He went on to secure more than £35,000 of funding, which ensured the club had excellent facilities.

Alan was nominated for his award by the sailing club and was selected as a winner by the RYA Awards panel.

At the event he enjoyed a celebratory lunch and was given a commemorative medallion and certificate by the Princess Royal, the President of the RYA.

Alan said it was a "huge surprise" when he first learned he would be receiving the award.

"With a name like mine, what activity other than sailing could I have pursued," he said.

“My greatest pleasure was, together with other club members, setting up a training centre and seeing the delight on the faces of those who gained RYA sailing certificates, knowing they had been introduced to much more than the sport itself.

"My thanks have always been to those who have assisted me and to Jean (Alan's wife) for her support and active participation throughout.”

Keith Stevens, who nominated Alan on behalf of the club, said: “We are delighted Alan has been recognised for his sheer dedication, commitment, enthusiasm, sportsmanship and friendship to Arden and its members.

“He has not only actively promoted the sport of sailing but encouraged many of us to become instructors under his leadership."
