POLICE have arrested 94 drink drivers across West Mercia and Warwickshire in the first two weeks of December alone, with one almost five times over the limit.

The two police forces launched an anti drink-drive campaign at the start of the month in an effort to stamp out the problem at a time when many may be tempted to get behind the wheel after enjoying a tipple at a Christmas party.

Over the past three years 110 people were killed or seriously injured in West Mercia in crashes involving drink or drugs and 469 others suffered minor injuries.

Superintendent Lee Davenport said both forces were committed to cracking down on drink and drug driving all year round, but the problem often increased around Christmas.

“We are very aware the festive season can present opportunities where people are tempted to drive after taking drugs or drinking,” he said.

“To combat this, extra patrols will be conducted in the run up to and over New Year in a bid to tackle those who commit the unacceptable act of drinking or drug driving.”

Penalties for drink driving can include up to six months in prison, a fine of up to £5,000 and disqualification from driving for up to three years.

Vicki Bristow from the West Mercia and Warwickshire Safer Roads Partnership said: “The simple fact is there is only one way of being sure that you are safe to drive and that is not to drink at all.

“Any amount of alcohol affects your ability to drive.

“We would ask people to consider other options when out drinking over Christmas, public transport, taxis and using nominated drivers are easy to arrange – drinking and driving simply isn’t worth the risk.”

Each person’s tolerance to alcohol depends on factors including weight, age, gender, stress levels and metabolism.
