A NEW scheme which aims to promote self-care is being backed by Dudley’s health chiefs.

Pharmacy First comes into effect from this month with Dudley Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG) encouraging residents to use pharmacies as the first point of call for minor ailments.

Patients across the borough who are exempt from paying prescription charges and registered with a GP practice in Dudley can access the Pharmacy First scheme for free treatment.

As part of the scheme they can be supplied with over-the-counter medicines without the need to attend a GP appointment.

Dr Jas Rathore, clinical lead at Dudley CCG, said: “Pharmacy First is a great way of patients getting help and advice from their local pharmacy.

“We are delighted this is now going to be available to all patients in Dudley.”

The scheme hopes to improve access to healthcare, help people self-manage minor ailments, such as coughs, colds, sore throats, indigestion, heartburn, and hay fever, and saves patient’s time.
