STAFF and pupils at Witton Middle School have taken part in a hair-raising day of fundraising recently to raise awareness for the Neuro Foundation.

Ella Sunderland, a pupil at Witton, suffers with Neurofibromatosis, which causes tumours to grow along her nerves, both inside her body and on her skin, and the school decided to hold the day to raise awareness of her condition.

The day was held as part of World Neurofibromatosis Awareness Month, which has also seen Niagara Falls lit up to raise awareness of the condition, while Birmingham City Council lit up the council house in blue and green in support.

For the day, pupils made a small donation to the Neuro Foundation in exchange for being allowed to come to into school wearing their own choice of wacky hairstyles.

Sharon Wilkins, office manager at Witton First School helped to organise the day. She said: “It’s an important cause and we want to raise the profile for Ella’s family and for other people in that situation, and we like to do our bit for the community.

“The kids had a great time. Some of the hair dos were amazing, they were a sight to behold. It was fantastic.”

The school managed to raise £273.80 from the donations on the day, which they will be adding to their recent total of £840 raised by several staff members taking part in a 10k run for the Neuro Faoundation.
