WALKERS in Kidderminster who helped Worcestershire communities travel to the moon and back have been presented with a commemorative plate which depicts the moon landing in 1969.

The Kidderminster Stride and Stroll Walking for Health group contributed 6,000 miles among its members in less than four months to the Moon Mission, Worcestershire County Council's Walking for Health scheme.

From March 20, groups across the county and Herefordshire walked, ran, pedalled, swam, toddled, rowed, wheeled, and took part in any other physical activity that involved travel, to collectively travel the 477,714 miles to the moon and back.

And the Kidderminster group's contribution to the mission landed the two counties on the moon on July 9.

Marcus Hart, leader of Wyre Forest District Council and Worcestershire County Council cabinet member with responsibility for health and well-being, said: "It's fantastic to see so many people in Worcestershire getting behind this programme so that we have reached this milestone. As chair of the health and well-being board I am delighted to see people in Worcestershire taking responsibility for their own health and well-being by getting active. Walking is a great way to improve physical and mental health and we live in a beautiful county, where walking is pleasure for many of us'."
