CREATIVE residents are being encouraged to get involved with a Bromsgrove hardware store's competition to make an original piece of art.

As part of national DIY Week - between September 14 to 20 - Broad Street DIY in Worcester Road is running a competition for residents to show their creative talent using materials or products available from a hardware store.

The art work can be presented in any form, based on any theme.

The winner receives a £50 gift voucher to spend at Broad Street DIY, while the winner of the under 18 category will be presented with a trophy and a £30 Artrix gift voucher.

Entries can be taken into the Worcester Road store until September 17, where they will go on display for the public to view.

Selected entries will also be featured on Broad Street DIY's Facebook page.

Justine Humphries, from Hanbury Road Art Studios, and Tony Turpin, chairman of Bromsgrove Arts Society, is helping staff at Broad Street DIY with the judging process.

There will also be a voting day for members of the public, who can visit the shop and choose their favourite entry on Friday, September 18.

Lisa Childs, a Broad Street DIY director, said: “We wanted to do something special to celebrate this year’s National DIY Week – which is all about encouraging people to get creative and develop their home improvement skills.

"Producing a piece of art for the home, using DIY materials, seemed a great way to inspire the public to find out more about the range of products you will find in a DIY shop.

"People might choose to create a sculpture from nuts and bolts, or produce an abstract picture using short lengths of plastic pipes. The possibilities are endless.”

All entrants will receive a 10 per cent discount voucher to use at Broad Street DIY during National DIY Week.
