A BRIERLEY Hill grandfather was killed by a swarm of wasps when he accidentally disturbed their nest.

Clive Southall, aged 83, of Rodway Close, was clearing weeds along the river bank at his holiday home at Baxter Mill Caravan Park in Welshpool, when he slipped and disturbed the nest at 11am on August 11.

He was then attacked by the wasps and his daughter, who was in the caravan, said she could "hardly see" her father's face as there were so many of them.

The inquest at Telford Register Office on September 2, heard that Mr Southall rushed into his caravan where he placed his head under the shower to wash them off.

Shortly after he had got rid of the insects and told his family he had been stung "a lot of times", he collapsed onto the floor.

The retired service engineer was given CPR by paramedics and airlifted to the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital but despite best efforts, he died at 9.25pm.

Senior coroner for Shropshire and Telford and Wrekin, John Ellery, concluded that Mr Southall's death had been accidental, as a result of wasp stings and anaphylactic shock.
