AN ELDERLY woman has been scammed by bogus workers in Wolverley, Kidderminster.

West Mercia Police is appealing for witnesses or information following a bogus call on Thursday, November 19.

At around 2.20pm two men approached a house in Sebright Road and confronted a vulnerable 79-year-old woman as she was leaving.

They were wearing green clothing and claimed they had been sent by the council to remove an Ivy tree in her garden. They demanded £240 to complete the work and the victim believed them.

One of the men has then followed the elderly victim into the property without her permission to collect the money before they had started working.

Thinking the two men would then start to remove the tree, the victim left the property to visit a relative nearby.

As she arrived at the relative's address she has seen the two men drive past.

The first suspect is described as a white man, approximately 30-years-old, of a stocky build, around 5ft9ins in height and had dark medium length hair. He was wearing all green clothing.

The second suspect is described as a white man, approximately 35-years-old, of a slim build, around 5ft11ins in height and had light coloured hair. He was also wearing all green clothing.

Police would like to speak to anyone who may have witnessed any suspicious activity in the area, or who may know the identity of the men described.

Contact West Mercia Police on 101, quoting incident reference number 362S of November 19.

Alternatively, information can also be passed on anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555111 or via their website.

To help protect yourself from bogus callers, West Mercia Police have also issued the following advice:

  • Genunine callers will normally make an appointment first and will carry identification with their photograph on.
  • Always put the chain on before you open the door.
  • If you don't know the caller, ask to see their identity card. Check it carefully and keep the chain on while you check.
