OLD pairs of glasses donated to the Beacon Centre have been sent to Sri Lanka to help people struggling with sight loss.

The specs sent by the Sedgley charity have helped around 50 people so far and hope to continue the good work.

Glasses are sent to the Senehasa Foundation, a registered charity run by Buddhist monks, who arrange for an optician to check them for their prescriptions before giving them to people in the remote Kurunegala region for free.

Rebecca Foley, who is a patron of the foundation, said: "The glasses have had a tremendous positive impact in enhancing the daily lives of people with visual impairments.”

Ms Foley is also on a mission to help two residents of the region who are both blind - the Rev Kannattiye Gannarathana Thero, aged 41, and 16-year-old Nayomi Sandhamaali Gamage.

She is hoping that equipment such as Velcro strips and talking clocks can be sent out to the country to help the pair and is appealing for any unwanted items to be donated.

Anyone who has low vision equipment or an old pair of glasses they would like to donate should call John Walters at the Beacon Centre on 01902 880 111 or drop them off at the Beacon Opticians Plus + on Wolverhampton Road East.
