COUNCIL chiefs are warning residents not to fall victim to a scam in which fraudsters falsely claim to be chasing council tax arrears.

Wyre Forest District Council is urging residents to take extra care when receiving cold calls.

Councillor Sara Fearn, cabinet member for transformation and change, said: "Although we do chase arrears by phone when necessary, we would never call residents unless a reminder notice had already been posted out to them.

"Our advice is that, if you receive a call, do not give your bank account details in order to make a payment.

"If you are making a one-off payment during a phone call, the council will ask only for your payment card details.

"If you want to check that the call is from the council before giving any details, please hang up and call our customer services team - ideally on an alternative line.

"They will be happy to verify that it was a genuine call from us and take a payment over the phone.

"I think it is despicable that scammers are conning people in this way and we will do everything possible to raise greater awareness so others do not fall victim."
