DEEP in the heart of a garage in Wollaston an award-winning secret is brewing.

Ciderist extraordinaire David Millward has been producing the popular drink from his home for the past 10 years, not for profit or commercial gain, but for the pure enjoyment of making unadulterated cider from the apples of a relative’s small holding in the South West.

David’s cider making, which started as a hobby, has now received not only recognition from the local Stourbridge and Halesowen CAMRA branch but his product has now won an award at an international competition.

Held at the Hereford Cider Museum, David achieved a 2nd place in the Internal Cider and Perry competition of 2016.

When asked by the local CAMRA branch vice chairman Phil Zjalic why he makes cider, David said: “It was the challenge of making a cider each year and never knowing what the cider will taste like.

“It is all dependent on the weather and the quality of the apples as to the final taste of the cider.”

David, who will now be bidding to take home the title of Stourbridge Beer Festival’s best cider for the third year in succession, is unsure what this year’s offering will be, adding: “We shall have to wait and see.”
