KIDDERMINSTER’S branch of Frankie & Benny’s has survived the axe after it was not included on a list of 33 under-performing sites set to shut.

Owners The Restaurant Group announced the closures after like-for-like sales fell 3.9 per cent, leading to pre-tax losses of £22.5 million for the first half of the year.

Yet a spokesman confirmed the site on Weavers Wharf will remain open.

Chairman Debbie Hewitt added: "The board has moved quickly to undertake a review of the operating strategy and we now have clarity on the issues facing our leisure brands, particularly Frankie & Benny's.

"The brand remains relevant and popular and we are confident that improved performance will be achieved by being more customer-focused and data-driven, and through better operational execution."

A spokesman for the Restaurant Group said increases in food prices and changes to its menu contributed to its decline in sales.

He said: "We have lost value-conscious customers, a result of significant price increases and the removal of popular value offers.

"Above market increases in food and beverage pricing in 2013 and 2014 were compounded in 2015 by a reduction in value offers and the removal of a fixed price menu, actions which significantly reduced covers."

It is thought up to 1,000 jobs will be affected as a result of the 33 closures, although the company are expected to redeploy the vast majority in other outlets.

Earlier this month, the company ousted chief executive Danny Breithaupt, replacing him with the former boss of Paddy Power, Andy McCue.
