STOURBRIDGE welterweight Sam Eggington is going into his fight with Birmingham rival Frankie Gavin tomorrow (Saturday, October 22) hoping to give out a ‘battering’.

The Amblecote boxer has received sponsorship for his Barclaycard Arena bout – which will be beamed live into living rooms on Sky Sports – from those closer to home in the name of Norton fish and chip shop Merchants.

Michael Jordan, of Merchants, said: “We wanted to give Sam our support as a family business.

“He is a local lad and has to find sponsors as part of being a top-class boxer like he is, so we were more than happy to help him out.”

Sam is desperate to regain his British title and knows he needs a good win to get back into contention, but he was in fighting spirit when he spoke to the News.

He said: “I grew up just off Brettell Lane so it’s great to have the support of a Stourbridge company at one of my biggest fights.

“Trainings gone well and now I can’t wait for the fight.

“He [Gavin] is like a child. He’ll say one thing to the press and then another thing to your face. I just don’t like the guy and he doesn’t like me, so it will be a great fight.”
