A NEW development in Alcester is to be named in honour of a renowned historical figure and well-known town resident posthumously.

Fields Park Drive retirement Living development, which is being built by McCarthy and Stone, will be named after Major Frederick George Jackson, East Surrey Regiment and Commander of the Jackson-Harmsworth polar expedition between 1894 and 1897.

Major Jackson, who was born in Alcester 1860, discovered, mapped and named the greater part of Russia's Franz Joseph Land.

The development has been named Jackson Place, in celebration of the Arctic explorer.

Robert Monkman, regional sales and marketing director for McCarthy and Stone West Midlands, said: "We wanted to choose a name for our new development that was memorable, and would resonate with both Alcester residents and McCarthy and Stone homeowners."

"Our chosen name, Jackson Place, will serve as a celebration of Major Frederick George Jackson and an acknowledgement of the town’s military heritage – a topic future homeowners will be extremely interested in."

McCarthy and Stone’s Retirement Living developments are designed to offer homeowners independent living within a safe and secure environment.
