STOURBRIDGE shoppers were lucky to escape unscathed when a car mounted the footpath and crashed into the town's Oxfam store.

A blue Vauxhall careered into a parked white Ford, before hitting the charity shop's front window, at around 2pm today (Friday November 17) on the High Street.

Police and paramedics were called to the scene but there were no reports of any serious injuries.

Eyewitness Jake Thompson, aged 22, from Brierley Hill, said: "A car came down the street hit a parked car and went into the front of the shop.

"I had my headphones on but I knew straight away something was wrong.

"If anyone had been walking past they would have been hurt.

"The people in the white car are having a bad day - they already had a parking ticket."

Windows and a door frame on the Oxfam store were damaged but covering shop manager Jackie Cartledge said: "It could have been a lot worse."

Stourbridge News:

She said the window had since been boarded up and secured and an engineer is expected Monday to fully assess the damage but she said: "It will probably be a new shop front."

The drama unfolded while she was having lunch upstairs and she added: "Someone shouted Jackie, Jackie – there’s a car."

She said luckily the vehicle didn't go through the window and the only volunteer in the shop at the time was at the counter about 12 feet away.

She said there was no damage to the contents of the store and the incident hadn't stopped the shop from trading and she added: "We'll still be trading tomorrow."

The driver of the car, a man, was taken into the store and given a cup of tea to await the arrival of emergency services.

West Midlands Ambulance Service sent an ambulance and a paramedic officer to the scene and a spokesman confirmed medics treated one person who was conscious and breathing.

It remains unclear as to how the crash happened.
