WORRIED Bayton residents fear dozens of untreated potholes on a main route into the village could result in someone getting killed or seriously injured.

Fed-up people living in and around Clows Top Road say their pleas to Worcestershire County Council for the highway to be resurfaced have yet to be answered satisfactorily despite the parish council raising the issue nine months ago.

Highways engineers carried out work this week to patch up some of the defects but villagers said the material used to fill the hole had already come out due to the wet conditions.

Resident Brian Link added people had also receiving conflicting information on what the council is planning to do to resolve the problem in the long term.

A spokesman for Worcestershire County Council said ‘structural patching’ will take place in the area during the next three months.

Mr Link said: “This is an accident waiting to happen. There are dozens of potholes – some of which are six or seven inches deep – on this busy road into the village.

“All it would take is for a motorcyclist to be travelling at night to assume there was a puddle in the road and to hit a pothole and be thrown off their bike. They could be killed or seriously injured.

“We have seen people suffer serious damage to their vehicles which could see the council hit with compensation claims.

“This is very frustrating and we feel we are being fobbed off. We have also had contradictory information on what they are planning to do – one letter said we would see ‘midi-patching’ while another talked about resurfacing the road in the next three months. Which one is it?”

A Worcestershire County Council spokesman said: "We have recently been made aware of issues following repair work that our Highways Team carried out in the Clows Top area.

“This area will be going through structural patching over the next three months, but we will continue to monitor this area and carry out further repairs that are required in the short term.

"We encourage residents to report potholes to us, the easiest way being via our website so that they can be dealt with accordingly."
