KINGSWINFORD could have a World Cup winner of their own in their midst if local girl Laura Leong continues her stunning success in floristry.

Laura has been crowned the Interflora Florist of the Year after lifting the title at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show.

She beat off competition from four other top class florists to claim the coveted title after having to create three floral items for which she was praised by the judges for exquisite workmanship, eye for detail and choice of colour.

Laura now goes forward to represent the UK at the Interflora World Cup which takes place in Philadelphia next year.

She landed the title in front of a live audience – the highlights of which were televised on the BBC last Saturday night.

Since then, Laura's feet haven't touched the ground.

She works part time at The Flower Basket in Market Street and said: “People keep dropping into the shop to congratulate me after watching the competition on television. Everyone has been very kind.

“It's just nice to be recognised.

“I only ever wanted to see how far I could progress, that's all that's ever interested me, to see if you can get better.”

Laura is no stranger to success. She has twice been named Chelsea Florist of the Year among her many awards.

And apart from creating designs, Laura also lectures and demonstrates her craft. She said: “I don't think it will change anything, because I already get good work, but hopefully that might increase now.”

Interflora director Nick Priest described Laura's creations as 'truly spectacular', adding: “She is a great example of the level to which our florists work.”

But Laura has no intention of resting on her laurels, admitting: “It will be really hard work in Philadelphia and quite stressful, so I don't suppose I'll get much time to see much of the country.

“But I've got no complaints, because it's what I wanted to do.”
