A HISTORIC pub is set to re-open after a £1million refurb.

The Chequers, based in Chipping Norton is re-opening its doors with a launch party on Friday June 22, starting from 6pm.

Visitors will be able to see a refurbished interior and a new menu, focused around small of plates of classic British pub food.

The pub has been around since 1470 and landlord Darren Gillet wanted to make sure that it remained true to its roots.

Mr Gillet said: "I believe the industry is trying too hard to be cool.

"Now, people - locals in particular - are just fed up with the pretentiousness. We definitely want to keep The Chequers as traditional as possible. Our ethos is real ale for real people.”

The new interior aims to reflect the pub's tradition, complete with hanging tapestries and fires. But one thing hasn’t changed - the same warm atmosphere that has welcomed generations of beer drinkers over the centuries.
