A VETS in Kington has issued a warning to dog owners to be aware of a virus in their pets.

Arrowfield Vet Practice said they detected parvovirus in a dog which was brought to the vets.

Parvovirus is a serious viral infection of the gastrointestinal tract of young dogs that can be fatal.

The virus attacks the cells of the gut resulting in vomiting and diarrhoea. Parvovirus also suppresses the immune system and a dog can become very lethargic and dehydrated.

It is essential that the dog receives supportive treatment immediately, including medicating and re-hydrating.

It is essential everything is cleaned with a high disinfectant rate because parvovirus persists in the environment for a long time and is very resistant to being eliminated.
