COUNCIL run pay and display machines in the city are set to stop accepting the old £1 coin this weekend.

Earlier this year, Worcester City Council spent £14,500 making upgrades so that the 14 machines, on the authority's car parks in the city, have been adapted to accept both the current and new pound 12-sided coin.

The upgrades were made on March 28, to correspond with the new pound coin's release.

This Saturday evening, a council worker will visit each of the machines to adjust the settings so that they only accept the new £1 coin.

As well as paying for parking by cash, drivers also have the option to pay for their parking and extend their stay using their mobile phone, and a credit or debit card.

Cashless parking service RingGo is offered as an alternative to coin payments in all of Worcester City Council's off street car parks.
