A TALENTED eight-year-old from Wyre Forest will be representing Worcestershire in a national chess final this summer for the second year in a row.

Cameron Henry, from Bewdley, has won the under 8s category in the 2018 Worcestershire Schools Chess Megafinal.

The win sees the schoolboy retaining the county schools title he won 12 months ago with him winning all six matches in this year’s tournament.

Cameron, who attends Kings Hawford School near Worcester, will again represent his school and the county in the contest’s next phase – July’s Gigafinal in Manchester where he will come up against other top-ranked children from across Northern England and Ireland.

In last year’s final he finished 14th out of 32 finalists in his age group.

His delighted mum Lorraine said: “Cameron has three loves in life – football, Glasgow Rangers and chess.

“With his chess he practices hard but more importantly, he really enjoys it. He did brilliantly in this year’s competition and we’re all very proud of him.”

Jim Turner, Cameron’s head teacher at Kings Hawford, said: “Cameron continues to impress us with his brilliant chess skills and we are delighted he has once again secured the county title in his age group – winning in such emphatic style.

“I am extremely proud that once again this year he will be representing Worcestershire and the school at the next phase of the competition. I know he’s determined to finish as high as possible.”
