KIND-hearted students from Heart of Worcestershire College have raised £124.44 to support Syrian refugees living in Redditch.

Pupils from the college’s 'Horizons 1' special educational needs department raised the money by selling homemade cakes, bracelets, and gifts at the college’s Summer Fayre.

The money was handed to volunteers from Bromsgrove and Redditch Welcome Refugees (BRWR) to coincide with Refugee Week from June 17 to 25.

Chair of BRWR John Cochrane said: "We welcome young people being warm to this cause.

“Thanks to them we can buy English books for supporting local refugees into employment and volunteering.

“The thoughtfulness of the students is a chance to reflect, during Refugee Week, on what we can all do.

“If nothing else, we can all say welcome. Refugees have left a troublesome time and we hope that Redditch gives them the chance to flourish."

Louise Elliott, training supervisor at HOW College, said: "We're really proud of our students for respecting such a worthy cause.

“As a team they chose to raise money for the local refugees, taking the initiative to sell homemade cakes, bracelets and hand painted gifts on a stall at the college's Summer Fayre.

“They also donated the prizes for their Hook-A-Duck contest and tombola. It's fantastic to see their passion for fundraising and their openness to caring for other people."

This year's Refugee Week marks a year exactly since the first Syrian refugee families arrived in Redditch – with now five Syrian families settling in the town.
