100 years ago, a Chicago Businessman called Melvin Jones thought that his luncheon club members should put their talents to use serving the local community, and formed the first Lions Club in July 1917.

Since then, his simple community service idea has become more than 46,000 Lions Clubs world wide with more than 1.4 million members who want to serve their community.

Redditch Lions Club, a mere 45 years old, is one of these clubs.

The aim of the club is to provide physical and financial help to the community and those in need.

All money raised is given to good causes as administration costs are borne by the members.

To celebrate this special milestone the group is inviting 100 pensioners from the local community to a traditional English tea party on September 20 at the White Hart Inn, in Headless Cross.

A spokesman from the group said: "Tea, sandwiches, and cakes will be offered to our guests, and there will also be music and entertainment. Please note the tea party is by invitation only.

"We look forward to celebrating 100 years of Lions Clubs with you."

Any Redditch pensioners that are interested in the free party can go to redditchlions.org.uk or call 0845 833 5914.

Invitations will be sent to the first 100 people who respond.

Redditch Lions meet on the second Wednesday of each month.
