A REDDITCH woman who spent an agonising two weeks "starving" before her husbands eyes at the Alexandra Hospital while waiting for a bed elsewhere has finally been moved.

Nicola Cross had been stuck in a bed, at the Alex Hospital, unable to eat or even drink water for the last two weeks waiting for a free bed at the Worcestershire Royal Hospital.

The 45-year-old mother of four and carer for her disabled daughter lost more than two stone and was at "breaking point" said husband Thomas.

However, she has now been moved.

Thomas said: "My wife desperately needed to see the specialists at the Worcestershire Royal but we were told repeatedly that there is just no room.

"I was scared if we didn't get help soon I would not be taking my wife home, she was starving before my eyes."

Four weeks ago Nicola went to see her doctor with sickness symptoms.

Unable to diagnose the problem she was sent to the Alex Hospital where she was given an IV, anti-sickness medication and half a bag of fluids before being sent home.

The following week she was sent back to the A&E.

After a 10 hour wait she finally got a bed and had been there for the last two weeks waiting to go to the gastroenterology ward at the Royal where she can be seen by specialists.

Thomas, from Abbeydale, said he begged doctors to send her anywhere after being told the Royal was packed.

"We keep being told that the Royal is on critical and has no beds," he said.

"However, when we got there we saw that there were seven beds free. There is just no communication between the hospitals.

"I just hope now that we can get some answers and my wife can get the help she needs."

A spokesman for Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust apologised for the anxiety caused to both Thomas and his wife and said she was admitted to Worcestershire Royal Hospital yesterday Tuesday, December 5.

They said: “A number of measures are in place to improve patient flow through our hospitals and every effort is made to ensure beds are available for those in most need, at the earliest opportunity.

"Longer term, capital funding has also been agreed for 81 additional beds at Worcestershire Royal Hospital."
