IT has taken more than a year but a controversial roundabout near Tenbury has come to the end of the road.

Contractors have been removing the roundabout on the A456 in Burford adjacent to Tenbury Hospital.

The roundabout was intended to slow traffic approaching Tenbury from the direction of Newnham Bridge and make it easier and safer for people emerging from the road that serves the hospital and Burford Primary School.

However, it has been blamed for a number of minor accidents and critics say that it has only been good fortune that there has not been a serious incident resulting in serious injury or death.

The decision to remove the roundabout was made in February 2016 but it has taken more than a year.

Now stronger measures will be taken including changes to the road to slow traffic down and the option of police using speed cameras to catch and deter motorists from going too fast.

Attempts to improve the signage and increase the visibility of the island failed to persuade people that it is safe.

The main problem with the island has been that vehicles coming from the direction of Newham Bridge have been failing to slow down.
