A WORCESTER-born musician has spoken of his close encounter with a shark at a holiday beach in Majorca – saying he had the 'Jaws' theme in his head as he saw the creature in the shallows.

Tim Prottey-Jones, who was born in Worcester and grew up in Droitwich, said his wife Angela was getting into the sea during a four-day holiday at Illetas beach on the Spanish island on Saturday when the blue shark appeared.

Mr Protteu-Jones described how the fish swam past "calmly, perhaps eerily calmly" through the shallow water.

He described it as "an amazing sight" and they immediately set out to capture the moment with Mr Prottley-Jones quickly throwing the phone to his wife so she could take the picture.

The 37-year-old, who went to Droitwich High School, said he had the ominous Jaws theme tune in his head when he saw the shark as the couple watched it swim within metres of them.

He said: “There was no screaming but there was an urgency. The lifeguards wanted to get everyone out. We spotted the shark very quickly.

“I wasn’t nervous but I put that down to the fact I was not in the water. If I had been in the water it might have been very different.

"Both myself and my wife were excited we had seen it. It’s not something you expect to see in Majorca. It was an honour to see it and a bit surreal.

“Jaws was on a few weeks ago. It was the only comparison you can make. We were thinking about the Jaws theme as it swam past.”

At least 100 people were in the water at the time and two minutes later it was deserted as parents scooped their children up in their arms and ran for the safety of the beach.

It is understood the shark had a serious head injury caused by a harpoon and had to be put down.

Mr Prottey-Jones and his wife went back into the water afterwards but admitted they were both a bit tentative.

Mr Prottey-Jones, a songwriter, actor, musician and owner of Demo Studio UK shared their experience through Twitter, sharing the photo.

He said on Twitter: “Yup, that's a shark! Never seen a beach clear so quickly! #illetes #illetesbeach #shark #jaws.”

He said: "I joked with Angela, 'It's because you're going in everyone's coming out'. That's when I saw this fin swim past in the shallow water very near to where everyone was standing."

He has a band called Wandering Hearts, signed to Decca Records, with a debut album set to be released in October.

He also appeared previously on ITV's Superstar by Andrew Lloyd Webber.

Mr Prottey-Jones was also a member of the Norbury Youth Theatre, based in Droitwich.

He performed the Long and Winding Road by the Beatles alongside David Hunter before giving a solo rendition of Aerosmith's Dream On.

He had been bidding to become the next Jesus Christ Superstar in the show's reincarnation on the West End stage.
