THE next speaker in the summer term was David Barrie with his talk entitled To Shangri- la by Steam.

David is very involved in the Darjeeling Railway Charity which has been able to assist and persuade the Indian Railways Authorities to keep this railway operating, as it is something quite unique in the world, and in fact is now an UNESCO World Heritage Site.

David was able to express his passion with this fascinating railway with a series of wonderful slides which show the amazing railway and the magnificent sights that are seen as it climbs up into the Himalaya foothills. The charity has become involved in the community through which the railway passes as well as the actual railway.

The group is continuing its series to introduce the various specialist groups that cater for the member’s interests – this time it is the Shakespeare Group. This group specialises in the study of the Plays of Shakespeare and the Leader is very knowledgeable about Shakespeare and is able to guide the members in the intricacies of the plays, their sources, the writing and meaning and also how they have been performed. The Meetings are monthly and each play is thoroughly discussed over a three-month period, and the aim is to discuss all 37 of his plays.
