OVER August Bank Holiday, the Morris men joined in the Rushcart Festival, hosted by Saddleworth Morris Men in Lancashire.

A few years ago, this festival was included on a TV programme about dance in folk traditions. This year was the 40th annual event and a meeting too of the Morris Ring.

The Rushcart weighs about two tons, with a member of the Saddleworth side as “jockey”, sitting high up on the rushes.

On Saturday it is pulled by up to 150 Morris men through the streets of Greenfield, Uppermill, Delph and Dobcross, with musicians playing.

Everyone stopped now and then for dancing and a wellearned beer.

Twenty-five Morris sides from all over the country attended, from different Morris traditions, such as Northern Clog, Border and Cotswold. It was a wonderfully colourful spectacle.

On Sunday, the cart was pulled uphill from Uppermill to St Chad’s Church, Saddleworth, for a Holy Communion Service. Rushes were strewn on the church floor, with fresh herbs added, which gave off a wonderful fragrance when walked on.

The Rushcart Banners from the past 39 years decorated the church balcony.

The church was packed.

Many hundreds of people from all over Britain and abroad lined the streets and watched the dancing and competitions.

It was a brilliant weekend and the weather was kind.
