WITH weddings costing a fortune these days a city gallery is taking people back in time to when couples had to make do and mend.
The Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum in Foregate Street is unveiling a wartime wedding with a chance to quiz vintage fashion experts on the clothing and fabric used.
The History Wardrobe presentation is happening at 7.30pm on Friday, July 10.
Led by costume historian Gillian Stapleton and actress Lucy Adlington, it will provide a marvellously nostalgic view about rationed fashion and commemorate make-do-and-mend.
Following the presentation, both fashion experts will be answering questions and showing off original items from the 1940s including knickers made out of parachute material. Angie Bishop, finance and visitor manager, said: “We are thrilled to be welcoming Gillian and Maggie to help us celebrate our wartime wedding.
“Such 1940s events are a world away from celebrations that we have today; this event will offer us a real insight into the wedding season as it was then and just what it took to rustle up a bridal trousseau.
“As we enter the 2009 wedding season, this event will be a perfect evening out for all those local brides-to-be so come along and join us.”
She said the event should appeal to anybody interested in fashion, history and art, as well as those who’d like to take a trip down memory lane.
