BURGLAR James Marson apparently “kissed” the window of a Worcester house he was about to raid, a court was told.
Judge Robert Juckes surmised that Marson had pressed his face against the glass to see if there was anything worth taking.
It led to his downfall because enough DNA was taken from the glass for police to be able to track him down.
Marson, aged 31, of St George’s Walk, Worcester, was jailed for 18 months after pleading guilty at Worcester Crown Court to a series of burglaries.
He took £1,850 worth of property from Gregory’s Court, where he looked in before smashing a rear kitchen window. He also broke into Cash Concepts in Broad Street, Worcester, allegedly stealing laptops and mobile phones. He claimed he stole only one phone.
A third break-in was in a dental surgery in Amblecote, Stourbridge, where he had a drink and left his DNA on a glass, said Gareth Walters, prosecuting.
James Dunstan, defending, said Marson had wasted his life on drugs, although he had worked as a chef before splitting up with his partner and going off the rails.
Judge Juckes said Marson was a prolific thief and had carried out some foolish enterprises.
