WE read with interest your article regarding Sajid Javid’s financial rescue bid for the Artrix but were surprised that he is looking to Worcestershire County Council for help.

We wonder whether he is aware that a similar arts venue, the Swan theatre, Worcester with a similar number of seats and activities, is funded partly by a £99,000pa grant from Worcester City Council and just £1,500 from the county council.

Worcester Bosch provided £15,000 for a recent successful children’s production re.

energy efficiency. We question the county’s willingness or ability to offer anything like £60,000pa to restore public funding to the Artrix but would like to be pleasantly surprised.

Sajid Javid could, as minister at the Department of Culture, Media and Sport, take a serious look at national funding for regional arts and in particular at the funding available to small venues like the Artrix and the Swan. This should be sustainable and long term. There again he could encourage companies such as Deutsche Bank to part fund our local venues either through taxation or sponsorship.
