Creditable placing for Bromsgrove and Redditch at national event

BROMSGROVE and Redditch Athletics Club took on the rest of the country at the English Road Running Association’s event this weekend held in Sutton Park.
The Saturday (12th) saw the senior team tackle the parkland roads. The wet weather did not dampen the efforts or enthusiasm of either the ladies’ team or the men’s team as they competed in the National Road Relays against many bigger City teams from around the country and against international athletes.
The first event was the ladies relay with the B&R AC ladies finishing 46th from 66 teams and completed the four-leg race in under 70 minutes, nearly four minutes quicker than the team at the Midland Championships three weeks earlier. Katy Anderson, running the first leg, finished only seconds off her pb in the same event a few years ago. Sally Hogan was next away and eclipsed her time in the Midland Championships. Team captain, Tamara Ball, was close to matching her Midland time, before Mel Hepke, on the anchor leg ran well to bring the team home in good order.
The ladies good performance, against stiff opposition, set down a marker for the men’s team, a challenge which the men seemed to relish.
Two of the men’s ‘A’ team which had run at the Midland Championships, were not available for the National event, again against very strong opposition, which meant promotion for two men from other B&R teams which had run at the Midlands. Although the revised team finished a minute slower than the Midland ‘A’ team, all six of the revised team ran quicker than they had at the Midland Championships.
Best runs came from Joe Smith and promoted Clive Dent who both bettered their Midland times by almost a minute. Mark Appleton bettered his Midland time by 11 seconds; Rich Lomas by four seconds; Ashley Ross by just a single second; whilst the other promoted runner, Steve Williams, was quicker by six seconds, despite twice stopping with shoe problems.
B&R had raced well at the Midland event to qualify for the Nationals ahead of many local regional teams and although the revised National team finished 75th, all the team acquitted themselves well with improved performances.
