Old Leamingtonians 0 Droitwich 16

Droitwich won their remarkable battle for Midlands Division 2 West league survival on Saturday with a clinical 16 points to nil victory at Old Leamingtonians. Needing a bonus point win to guarantee survival they did not manage that, but with relegation rivals Dunlop only managing a slender win points difference was sufficient.

On a fine but blustery day Droitwich made the early running with Ben Rean looking lively on the wing and Glen Topping providing energy. Bobby Scott-Walker put the visitors ahead with a penalty before good running by Greg MacLeod and Mark Strutt found robust prop forward James Thomas to power forward, another infringement saw Scott-Walker double the lead.

The second half saw Droitwich with the wind at their backs press forward to score the four tries to claim the bonus point, Sam Davenport raced over after strong work by Alex Saddington and Russ Brown before a number of wrong options saw Droitwich frustrated.

A dropped pass in midfield was seized up on by Scott-Walker who raced in to score.

The final few phases saw Rob Poke and Dave Ingram all go close before the final whistle ended a remarkable turn in fortunes for the Spa side - having been staring relegation in the face a few weeks ago they drew two and won four of their last six games. Something that the young side can take in to next season.

Delighted captain James Shewell added: “we were almost certain to go down a few weeks ago but have produced a superb turn around, showing how much talent we really do have at Droitwich.”
