Spa up and running with first win

DROITWICH secured a nail biting two-wicket victory against Bromyard in Saturday's Worcestershire Premier League game at St Peters Fields thanks to some inspired bowling and fielding.

On a true wicket, Spa made a dream start reducing Bromyard to 16-5 from the opening 12 overs, the opening partnership of Adam Crowle and Phil Thomas sharing all five wickets.

Both bowled with great discipline and were backed up by a sharp display in the field, with teenage wicketkeeper David Huntbatch making a good impression on debut.

The game then looked liked being turned on its head with an 80-run partnership between Pakistani Ahmed and Josh Tongue before the latter was brilliant caught by Crowle.

Bromyard then foldd like a pack of cards to be bowled out for 112 in the 35th over.

Droitwich captain Martyn Davie (22) and Jake Young (30) got their reply with the bat off to a solid start.

A combination of fine spells from Bromyard bowlers Pete Whittenbury and Tongue, coupled with a poor shot selection, saw wickets continued to fall.

However experienced left hander Paul Bryan guided Spa home with a solid 23, despite surprisingly being dismissed when the scores were level, leaving teenager Jack Sealey to confidently stroked the winning shot.

Spa go to Colwall on Saturday (1pm start), aiming to build on their first league win of the summer.

Droitwich's thirds and fourths secured victories against Netherton and Wall respectively, but the seconds were thumped by Bewdley where they never got close to the home side's whopping 332.

On Sunday, Spa's 1sts threw away a victory chance to tie with Old Elizabethans - Matt Williams scoring an impressive half-century - whilst the seconds were destroyed by Astwood Bank by 184 runs.

Three wickets apiece for Jake Howl and Scott Clarke being the bright spots as only Ash Bath hit double figures in a paltry 68 all out.
