BROMSGROVE hockey international Dan Fox believes England stand on the brink of glory at the Rabobank World Hockey Cup.

The national team are very much in with a shout of winning the tournament in Holland after reaching the semi-finals.

England face the hosts nation after they topped Pool B and are set to play in front of a bumper crowd.

Awaiting the winners are the world’s top ranked team Australia in Sunday’s final.

England booked their place in the semi-finals with a thrilling 3-2 win over Belgium, who were the only side who could have finished ahead of them in the group stage.

That ensured they finished second in Pool A and will play the winners of Pool B.

They started slowly with a 1-1 draw against Spain but then defeated India and Malaysia before losing 5-0 to Australia, before bouncing back against Belgium.

Former Callowbrook First School pupil Fox said: “England are ranked fourth in the world so reaching the semi-finals is about par.

“There have been a few ups and downs but to beat Belgium and make the last four was fantastic.

“I am 31 and am the oldest member of the squad. The team has changed quite alot over the last two years and it feels strange I am one of the more experienced members of the squad.”

Fox though believes England’s big tournament experience could be key.

Four years ago, they lost to Australia at the same stage, while in 2012 a GB squad containing Fox and many of his England team-mates finished fourth.

“The experience of playing at the highest level will be a help,” he said.

“We just missed out on a medal at the London Games. The atmosphere was incredible and because Holland is a hockey mad national the crowds have been brilliant.

“We’ve also had alot of friends and family over to support which has also been brilliant.”
