BROMSGROVE experienced their first setback of the season in the Birmingham and District League One after being edged out by Old Hill for two wickets.

Their first defeat of the season saw the Boars slip to third in the table and allow their Black County opponents to cup the gap to just three points.

On a dry day, Bromsgrove won the toss and had no hesitation to bat on what looked to be a good wicket.

After the first few overs the pitch played slower than expected and the away side found scoring runs quickly difficult.

But losing clusters of wickets proved costly for Bromsgrove, as they slipped from 21-0 to 33-3.

Ash Newdick (21) was the only batsman to offer something before being adjudged LBW. Tom Underhill adapted and constructed a well deserved 48 to be the Boars' top scorer, while Tom Green (11) was the only other batsmen to reach double figures as they collapsed to 127-all out.

Nigel Davenport was the pick of the bowlers with 3-40 well supported by Dmitri Ratnayake 2-33.

Captain Mark Evenson made an early breakthrough when he dismissed his opposite number Dann Cox for LBW on 27.

Bromsgrove kept the pressure on with spin from both ends Ganderton (3-14) and Evenson (3-11).

Only Nitesh Patal (27) provided any real threat to take see Old Hill home with a canter, until he was caught by Evenson.

Graeme Whiles came back on and removed BIlly Cox to make the hosts eight wickets down with runs still needed.

But Some lusty blows at the end saw Old Hill home to 130-8.

"I think we paid the price for losing wickets in clusters," said Evenson.

"It was disappointing we didn't bat our 55 overs, if we had done that then we could have won the game.

"We got very close but fell a but short and Old Hill's wickets went at more regular intervals."

With Newdick missing the game because of family commitments, Bromsgrove welcome back Alex Kervezee, who scored a century for Worcestershire against Leicestershire in the County Championship, for Saturday's home clash against bottom of the table Wombourne (noon start).
