BARNT Green’s fine season continued as they booked their place in the next round of the ECB’s National T20 Cup.

The Cherry Hill Road ride defeated Tamworth and Shrewsbury on Sunday in a thrilling finals day.

They will now represent the Birmingham League in the West Midlands area stage, which will be held on August 10, at Green’s home ground.

Captain Andy Sutton said: “The team produced two excellent displays. It was very tight against Tamworth but once we got through that we played well against Shrewsbury.

“It’s great to reach the West Midlands finals and have the chance to represent the league.”

In the semi-finals at Walsall, Green edged Tamworth.

After being put into bat, Barnt Green made 141-6, with William Baker (29), Luke Radford (23), and Andy Sutton (34) scoring runs.

Tamworth were restricted to 136-6 in 20 overs, despite a well-struck 45 by Joe McNulty, with Tom Burton taking two wickets.

In the final, Green swept away Shrewsbury, who had defeated Walsall previously, with a nine wicket win.

Radford (2-10), Tom Brown (2-3) and James East (3-16) tore into the Shrews, who were dismissed for 52 in the seventh over.

Baker (16) and Nathan Newport (33) steered Green to 54-1.

Meanwhile, they earned local bragging rights in a rain affected Birmingham Premier derby against Himley on Saturday.

With the game delayed on several occasions because of the wet weather, Sutton’s side managed to earn a winning draw.

Himley had 38 overs to bat first after a late start and made 171-9, with spinners Joshua Poysden and Simon Mugava taking three wickets each.

After another enforced break, Green had a smaller target and Baker (36), Newport (27) and Sam Cheshire (29) steered the home side to 120-5 in 20 overs.

Andy Sutton said: “We got the best result possible on a very frustrating day.

“Full credit to groundsman Damon Willetts, who worked very hard to make sure the match could go ahead.”

Green go to third-placed Brockhampton on Saturday (noon start).
