BROMSGROVE maintained their push in the Birmingham and District League Division One with a winning draw against struggling Wellington.

Despite being frustrated by the Shropshire side's batsmen and being denied outright victory, the Boars earned a useful 18 points.

It means they are third in the table, 11 points behind leaders Ombersley.

At the halfway stage of the season, the top five sides are starting t break away.

Captain Mark Evenson said: "At this stage we are not even talking about promotion, we are just focusing on winning the next game.

"But we've played some good cricket and got ourselves into a very good position, which is impressive considering we've had four games abandoned because of rain."

The home side put Bromsgrove into bat first after winning the toss but the visitors promptly took the game away from them in impressive fashion.

Ashley Newdick (49), Alexei Kervezee (50) and Jayden Levitt (60) all got among the runs as Bromsgrove reached 240-8 in 55 overs.

Dan Lloyd took four wickets for Wellington.

In reply, the home side's opening batsmen offered some resistance and guided them to 100-3, but once Sam Tilt (52) was trapped lbw by Evenson Wellington collapsed and lost six wickets for 57 runs.

Evenson (2-20), Newdick (2-26), James Ganderton (2-15) and Graeme Whiles (2-20) shared the wickets.

But Tim Dean (12) hung on as the hosts reached 158-9 in 55 overs.

Evenson said: "We thought getting 200 runs was a good target so we managed to bat them out of the game.

"They also dropped five or six catches which also really cost them.

"In reply, they frustrated us at the start and we just ran out of time taking wickets but it was another good display.

"Wellington didn't really offer anything, most teams want to play proactive cricket but they just existed rather than did anything."

Bromsgrove go to Moseley on Saturday (noon start).
