Impressive Green on a high after Brockhampton win

First published in Sport

BARNT Green confirmed their position as one of the Birmingham and District Premier's best sides as they produced a powerful display to see off in-form Brockhampton at their The Parks home.

A superb bowling display and a brilliant performance with the bat by Ed Pollock ensured Green recorded their best win of the season.

Victory also kept the Cherry Hill Road side in the running for the title. After 11 matches, they are handily placed in fourth, just 23 points behind the leaders Berkswell.

Captain Andy Sutton said: "This was an absolutely great win for us.

"Brockhampton are a very strong side and they don't lose many games.

"We have a new looking side and it's always interesting to see how it gels but we've got depth in batting and lots of variation in our bowling. We don't rely on individuals, it's a team effort and we certainly feel we can push on."

Brockhampton had won the toss, opted to bat first and certainly looked capable of posting a big score as opener Henry Langford (91) provided the early impetus.

But when he was stumped by wicketkeeper Sam Cheshire off Tom Brown's delivery, the game changed as the home side collapsed from 204-3 to 246 all out in the 55 overs.

Brown (3-24) and paceman Luke Radford (2-48) took wickets but skipper Sutton also waded in with 4-60 as Brockhampton's final seven wickets recorded just 30 runs.

Barnt Green recovered from an early setback, after Nathan Newport was dismissed by Chris Burroughs for four runs.

Pollock's patient 94 not out off 136 deliveries provided the backbone of the innings but William Baker (35), Tom Burton (34), Cheshire (20) and Sutton (25) also added crucial runs as Green reached 248-6 in the 54th over.

Sutton said: "At one stage Brockhampton looked as though they might make 270 or 280 runs but we stuck to our task and bowled very well as a unit.

"Ed Pollock then batted well but we were solid throughout and we made a good score."

Green go to Knowle and Dorridge in the first match of the second half of the season (noon start).
