THE bell has rung on a historic season for Droitwich Amateur Boxing Academy, but the club is already looking forward to the next campaign and attracting more young boxers.
During the season, 26 boxers have taken part in 100 bouts – 49 wins, 48 losses and three no-decision skills contests.
The honours were shared between 27-year-old Michael ‘Buller’ Pardoe, who reclai-med his Midland Counties Senior welterweight title, and 15-year-old Luke Evans, who won 10 of his 15 bouts including a Midland Counties junior title.
Pardoe also passed a historic landmark of 150 career fights and his contribution to the sport was recognised by the West Midlands Division of the Amateur Boxing Association in a short ceremony and presentation in Wolverhampton.
Among the other top performers were 11-year-old Joe Doyle, who won five of his seven contests including victory over the national champion, and Lewis Smith, 14, who recorded three wins out of three.
Sian O’Toole, 15, also became the fifth female boxer to represent the Droitwich club.
But the undoubted highlight has taken place outside of the ring with the opening of the Academy’s new, purpose-built headquarters at King George’s playing fields.
The development is providing a greatly enhanced environment for the club’s young boxers to hone their talents as well as anyone interested in taking up the sport or just wanting to stay in shape.
A variety of fitness and boxing-related training classes are also held for people from the age of eight upwards, which include women only sessions.
Academy secretary, Chris Andrews, said that the close season provided a great opportunity for people to pop down and sample what’s on offer.
He said: “We already have a broad cross-section of people using our facilities and we extend a warm welcome to all-comers, from youngsters keen to box competitively or even seeking an active pastime to adults who maybe want to improve their fitness levels or simply lose a few pounds for their summer holidays.
“We have an excellent reputation within boxing circles and are keen to strengthen this by developing more talent whilst encouraging more people to use our impressive facilities.”
