JESSICA Varnish believes Australian rival Anna Meares will be her biggest obstacle to gold at the Glasgow Commonwealth Games.

The Finstall rider, 24, goes for glory in the women’s sprint in Scotland.

There’s no doubting that two-time Olympic champion Meares will be the rider to beat.

“The Commonwealth Games are a big deal and I want to go there and do myself justice,” said Varnish.

“There’s not as many competitors as a World Championships but I still think Australia are a massive cycling nation and Anna Meares is in good shape.

“It’s a good time to go out there and try things and I am really looking forward to it.”

Varnish, who is a member of Halesowen CC, will also be hoping to put behind the disappointment of missing out at the London 2012 Olympics, when she and Victoria Pendleton were disqualified in the team sprint.

She added: “It’s the closest we’ll get to a home games and I am looking forward to personally to being cheered on by parts of the crowd.

“London was a massive disappointment and I don’t think I will ever get over that and then I had an injury last year.

“Strangely it was probably my injury which helped me the most after London.

“You need to get some perspective.”

Meanwhile, Bromsgrove’s Dan Fox is part of the Men’s hockey team aiming for glory.

The national side will be keen on bouncing back from their fourth pace at this summer’s World Cup.

Fox was also part of the GB squad which finished fourth in the London Olympics.

He said: “The Games involves a lot of the top sides in the world, you’ve got Australia, New Zealand, India, South Africa and so on, so there’s a lot of tough competition.

“We’ve actually been a bit disappointed with how we’ve gone in previous years, and with the standards we set ourselves we really want to be medalling and ideally competing in that final.

“We’re pretty determined to go out and win it – we want to take our best side and show everyone what we can do.”
