DROITWICH men saw off Worcester Veterans 4-3 in their latest Summer League match.

Spa went into this fixture aiming to prove that last week’s defeat against Stourport was a one-off.

They held their nerve in a game where the scoring changed hands on numerous occasions.

Droitwich went ahead with their first attempt after a minute from a well-worked short corner routine, with Craig Timmis flicking the ball past the keeper.

Droitwich’s composure grew as they contained the Worcester forwards, and the rolling substitutes meant Spa maintained their focus.

After the halfway period, Spa became sloppy and stopped using the flanks as they had done in the earlier half, when Alexei Payne missed a golden chance to tap the ball home after a flowing move down the right.

Droitwich continued to attack down the middle, which Worcester defended well, and they equalised from a quickly-taken free-hit, although there was a suggestion the set piece had been taken from the wrong place.

The umpire ignored the home side’s protests, and the Worcester attacker calmly dispatched the ball into the corner of George Robertshaw’s net.

Droitwich then edged ahead early in the second half when Joseph Neal finished off a slick Spa counter-attack.

However, they failed to defend properly and after a good save from Robertshaw, the ball looped up for the away side to snaffle up the close-range chance and make it 2-2.

But Droitwich regrouped and were determined not to lose this game. Guy Newson popped up to finish smartly to restore the home side’s one-goal advantage.

But the away team equalised once more following a raid down their right-hand side and a smart finish.

Droitwich were beginning to play effectively down the wide areas and forced Worcester back into their own half.

Their pressure paid off as Newson had time and space to pick his spot and fire home the winner for the second week in a row.

Droitwich take on bottom of the table Bromsgrove Boars next, looking to end the summer season on a high and to take their momentum into the winter season.
