THERE was much to be celebrated at Avoncroft CC last Friday as the club officially unveiled their new pavilion.

Worcestershire CCC captain Daryl Mitchell was the guest of honour to open the facility, which has been made bigger and completely refurbished.

Over 100 spectators were on hand to witness the special moment in the club’s history.

The improvement work cost £43,000 with the Avoncroft raising some of the cash and accepting donations, including a sizeable one from an anonymous benefactor.

Chairman Rod Braithwaite said: “It was a great evening, Daryl was a lovely guy who took his time to talk with everyone and we were delighted to have him unveil the pavilion.

“It will make a huge difference for us now, we will be able to host events such as christenings and weddings.”

Meanwhile in the Worcestershire County League Division Three, Croft lost by eight wickets to promotion-chasing Bredon.

They made a steady start thanks to Matt Hare (50) and David James (46), before a few quick wickets fell.

A recovery lead by Ben Warwick and Dan Elliott meant Avoncroft finished with a below par score of 219-9 off 50 overs.

Bredon came out the blocks flying before Craig Hughes (1-44) dismissed Tim Fenney (20).

From then on it was hard work for Croft as opener McVicker stroked an aggressive 112 before being removed by Ian Carpenter.

But Clive Fenney (54 no) guided Croft’s opponents to 223-2.

Croft entertain Cleobury Mortimer on Saturday (1pm start).
