DROITWICH secured a precious victory in yet another cliff hanger of a game at Evesham on Saturday and were indebted to another determined innings from Jez Hanson who was the hero in the one-wicket victory.

On a slow wicket, Spa bowled and fielded well to restrict the home side to 150 all out, with skipper Martyn Davies taking 6-23 with his beguiling left arm spin.

In reply, Droitwich appeared to be coasting at 73-1 with Kris Corbett and Max Young in partnership but their departures sparked an unbelievable slump that saw Spa slip to 89 for 8 with five lbw decisions awarded by the umpires in a near-disastrous five-over spell.

With 62 runs still needed, Hanson and fellow teenager Karl Thompson then batted with great sense and determination - both playing some lovely shots along the way. The pair took Droitwich to within 4 runs of victory before Hanson was dismissed for 35, leaving Thompson to secure the crucial victory with a priceless 23 not out.

With Bank Holiday Monday’s game abandoned due to rain, Spa will guarantee safety with victory over lowly Harvington this coming Saturday.
