HEAD coach Dan Protherough was relieved to see Bromsgrove end their ten game wait to win at home.

The Boars recorded their first league win at Finstall Park since November 16 last year as they edged out Bournville 25-24 on the opening day of the National Three Midlands.

Fly half Richard Mahony made sure of the points with a last-gasp drop goal, after the hosts had seen a 12 point lead frittered away.

It was a dramatic and much-needed way for Bromsgrove to get back on track but the new head coach believes it will take time for this year team to get the winning habit after last year's relegation.

He said: "It takes time to learn a winning habit, it’s not something that just comes it’s something you have to work on, so that was an important win for us.

“We were leading by 12 points but Bournville’s kicker played well and kept them in the game.

“We hadn’t won a game for seven or eight months and when they came back that was probably at the back of their minds.

“But Richard Mahony did well and he won it with a goal which was a bit like Jonny Wilkinson’s in the World Cup 2003 final.”

Bromsgrove had fallen behind to an Alex Warner penalty but they quickly got into their stride.

Mahony scored a penalty, but Bournville edged ahead thanks to a breakaway try from Robert Chesner.

Two penalties from Mahony brought them back into contention, before Paddy Longden pounced on a loose pass to streak away for an excellent try.

Mahony added the extras and a penalty followed to give the home side a 19-10 lead at half-time.

The kicker added three more points but Bournville responded well and scores for Paul Sumner and Robin Etough handed them the advantage.

In one final desperate attack, Mahony calmly slotted a drop goal to win with the game's last kick.

The Boars go to Sutton on Saturday (3pm ko).
