DAN Protherough was delighted with Bromsgrove RFC's defensive solidity.

The Boars recorded a third straight win in the National Division Three Midlands with a well-deserved 27-3 victory at Hinckley.

While Ieuan Mustow, Will Harris and Tom Hunt all touched down, the fact that Bromsgrove did not concede a try was the head coach’s most pleasing aspect.

He said: “We made a very good start and were 13-0 ahead early on and that gave us a platform to build on.

“We could have scored more tries but I was very pleased with how we defended.

“I felt we had let too many points in this season, so to not concede a score was very pleasing.”

Protherough was not getting carried away from the Boars’ fine start to the campaign.

Since suffering relegation last season, they have won four of their first six matches and are comfortably placed in sixth.

However, the Boars’ chief is keeping his feet on the ground.

While Bromsgrove have beaten the likes of Hinckley, Burton, Dudley Kingswinford and Bournville, as well as earning a bonus point against Sutton Coldfield in a narrow defeat, they have yet to really tackle the division’s best sides.

The Finstall Park outfit opened their campaign with a commendable effort against leaders Leicester Lions, losing 36-18.

He said: “I do feel there is more to come from the team, which is pleasing considering our start to the season.

“The team may be young but that means they absorb direction very quickly and are then able to replicate it on the pitch.

“As I have said before, the division is very close but we have won in Hinckley and Burton.

“Of the top teams, we have only played South Leicester, so we’ve got some tough games to come.”

Wayne Cooper is set to return for Saturday’s home clash against Lichfield (3pm kick-off) but Mustow is set for several weeks on the sidelines with an ankle problem.

James Lloyd-Jones is also available for action.

Lichfield won their second game of the season at home to Bournville on Saturday.
